ShilpiKala: An E-commerce Store for Handmade Indian Art

The customer-facing store we built for ShilpiKala, which sells handmade Mandala and Lipan art: catalogue, accounts, cart, checkout with automatic discounts and shipping, and guest order tracking.

The starting point

ShilpiKala sells handmade Indian art online — Mandala and Lipan (terracotta and mirror-work) pieces, wall and decorative art, gifts and custom commissions — to buyers across India. Many pieces are one-offs or made to order, so the store has to handle limited stock, custom work with longer lead times, and buyers who may not want to create an account to check on an order.

We built the store on Next.js. This case study covers what a customer sees and uses on the live site, checked page by page on 21 October 2026.

The customer journey

Every stage below is live on shilpikala.com.

What we delivered

Each item lists where it can be verified.

Catalogue & product pages

Helping buyers find a piece and decide on it.

  • Categories, search and curated shelves

Eight category pages (Mandala, Lipan, handmade, wall and decorative art, custom art and gifts), product search, a category-filterable “Trending Now” shelf and a newest-pieces section.

    Evidence: Live site: /, /shop, /categories/*

  • Promotional pricing

Products can carry a sale price over an original price; the store shows the saving in rupees and as a percentage badge on cards, product pages, the cart and checkout.

    Evidence: Live site: /product/dotwork-lotus-mandala

  • Stock status, related pieces and reviews

Out-of-stock pieces are labelled as such, each product page suggests related pieces from the same category, and customers can write reviews.

    Evidence: Live site: product pages

Customer accounts

Sign-in for returning buyers without forcing it on first-time ones.

  • Sign in, registration and password reset

Customers can create an account, sign in and reset a forgotten password. The account area holds their orders, wishlist and saved delivery details.

    Evidence: Live site: /account, /account/orders

  • Wishlist

Pieces can be saved to a wishlist from product cards and product pages.

    Evidence: Live site: /wishlist

Cart, checkout & order totals

Totals that are right before the customer pays.

  • Live cart totals

Changing quantity or removing a piece updates the subtotal, the amount saved, shipping and the total immediately.

    Evidence: Live site: /cart

  • Shipping rules applied automatically

A flat ₹150 shipping charge is added below ₹5,000 and removed at or above it, matching the published shipping policy; the checkout tells the buyer about the free-shipping threshold.

    Evidence: Live site: /checkout, /shipping

  • Checkout

One page collects email, name, phone and a full delivery address beside the order summary, then hands over to payment with “Pay Now”.

    Evidence: Live site: /checkout

Order tracking & policies

Answering “where is my order?” without an email to the shop.

  • Guest order tracking

Any buyer can look up an order with the order reference from their confirmation email (format SK-1001) and the email they checked out with — no account needed.

    Evidence: Live site: /track-order

  • Shipping and returns pages

Dispatch and delivery timelines for in-stock and made-to-order pieces, shipping-notification emails with tracking numbers, and a 7-day returns and replacements policy linked from every product and the checkout.

    Evidence: Live site: /shipping, /return-refund-policy

What the evidence supports

  • Browsing, accounts, cart, checkout up to payment, and guest order tracking all work on the live site, checked page by page on 21 October 2026.
  • Discounts and shipping are calculated by the store itself and shown consistently on product cards, product pages, the cart and checkout.

What we don’t claim

  • Sales, order volume or conversion figures: we haven’t published any.
  • Behind-the-login systems — the store’s admin, payment-gateway integration and order-processing workflow — aren’t visible on the public site, so this page doesn’t describe them.
  • Test coverage: this page documents what we checked by hand on the live site, not an automated test suite.
